Butte, MT to Billings, MT (via Yellowstone)

when where
10am leaving Butte, MT; headed for Yellowstone
11am I-90 exit 281, MT
noon Hwy 89 mile 32, near Emigrant, MT
on the way to the north entrance of Yellowstone
1pm lunch in Gardiner, MT
2pm Mammoth Hot Springs, just inside the north entrance of Yellowstone. Though we had all seen hot springs before, the ones at Yellowstone are particularly impressive.

3pm Near Indian Creek Campground, Yellowstone. "Oh give me a home..."

4pm Lower Geyser Basin, Yellowstone

5pm Kepler Cascades, near Old Faithful, Yellowstone
6pm Across from Yellowstone Lake. We also encountered a still-frozen lake not too far down the road with snowy banks.

7pm Right after leaving Yellowstone, we started down Hwy 14/16/20 (no, we don't know why it has 3 numbers). Within minutes the scenery changed drastically from the evergreen-laden mountains, to huge, jutting cliffs along the the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway that housed a large canyon. The pictures do not do justice to these awesome cliffs. It was one of the most scenic parts of the trip.

8pm Cody, WY
Dinner at La Comida. At the end of the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway is the city of Cody. Cody was founded by Buffalo Bill and has a lineage back to an authentic old west town. It still seemed to have some of that lineage intact, replete with an impressive looking rodeo arena that advertised nightly rodeos beginning in June, rows of shops with old west facades including several "western wear" outlets, and a complement of citenzry walking around dressed up in old west garb. It is clear that this is the main thing Cody has going for it, and so is appropriately juiced up to amuse folks like us touring the area and looking for the nearest watering hole. We were starting to wear thin a bit and weren't as aggressive with the picture taking, so unfortunately we don't have more than the one photo from Cody.
9pm on the way out of Cody, WY
10pm WY 120 it was really dark
11pm Billings, MT
The Best Western has high speed internet access! Kevin, Paul, and Kimberly breathe a sigh of relief and waste no time getting re-connected to the information superhighway.
